Oh splash pad, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways...
What's the number one thing I'm always hearing on HGTV, my absolute FAVORITE channel?? It's ALL about LOCatIOn, LoCAtIoN, LOCATION! And, for a "small" town and a young mom with a babe who simply can't be entertained enough, we have it in spades! We can walk absolutely EVERYwhere(which is ideal for a kid with NO patience who hates her carseat with a fire-breathing passion), including: the grocery store, the library(storytime rocks!), town square with its outdoor movies and many a weekend festival which always include fireworks, my work, church, the temple, the all important fabric store, AND most importantly in sweltering St. George, THE SPLASH PAD. I've gone on walks with my doggies here for a couple years now, always looking for an excuse to take advantage, and now, I've got one...And it throws a fit every time we have to leave:) She cruises everywhere. She has no qualms about turning her knees red from dragging them all over the rocky pavement. I try starting her out in the 2 inch water and before I can blink she's headed straight into the deeper part with the faster current and the swarms of big kids who constantly run her over-but she never minds. I love it because it wears her out. But I have to admit she wears me out too. Up the rocks, down the rocks, up the stairs, down the stairs, into the river, out again... No sitting for mommy--I would lose her, and find her flying off a rock head first somewhere. She's fearless, this one.
The other part of it is she's always got her face in the water. She drinks the stuff constantly. And I watch other moms flip out at their kids because there's "chemicals" in there. That part never bothered me, a little pool water never hurt anyone. But I was concerned that maybe she's really thirsty. So we brought the bottle next time and it never left her mouth, except for when she would dunk it for good measure. And it definitely slowed her WAY down. She still moves incessantly, but it's no longer at the speed of light, for which I am ever so grateful. Problem solved.
